The Environics Institute for Survey Research was established by Michael Adams in 2006 with a mandate to conduct in-depth public opinion and social research on the issues shaping Canada’s future. It is through such research that Canadians can better understand themselves and their changing society. The Institute is a not-for-profit corporation that typically works in collaboration with other organizations from the public, private and not-for-profit sectors. Partners provide the thought leadership, networks, and capacity to connect research insights to meaningful action and social change.
Founder
Michael Adams is Founder and President of the Environics Institute, which he launched in 2006 after many years heading Environics Research Group which he co-founded in 1970.

Fellows
The Environics Institute maintains a Fellows program to promote greater collaboration between the Institute and its community and research partners, and to promote wider use and circulation of the Institute’s reports and data. Environics Institute Fellows lead public discussions, make presentations, publish op-eds and articles or conduct further research on topics relevant to the Institute’s mandate and focus, where possible using the Institute’s own survey research data. Fellows also help guide the development of future Institute projects and challenge the Institute to continuously improve the quality and relevance of its work. Publications
Committing Sociology is a curated collection of commentary, analysis, and long-range reflections from the Institute’s research on issues ranging from social diversity and electoral politics, to civic participation and the environment.
As a whole, the volume illustrates the implications of the Institute’s work over the last decade for shaping public policy and assisting Canadians to understand ourselves as our country turns 150 years old. What is new in how we view Canada? What have we kept from the past and what have we left behind? Are we in the process of reinventing ourselves – perhaps as the world’s first truly post-modern country?
The book features published essays by:
- Michael Adams, Founding President, Environics Group of Companies, Environics Institute
- Keith Neuman, Executive Director, Environics Institute
